Being initiated into the UNESCO Heritage City that is Vigan, Ilocos Sur will draw out several different emotions all at the same time. Though it’s one hair away from overwhelming, it is most definitely a good thing.

I took the entire afternoon around Vigan. There is the obligatory stop at the Pagburnayan. If you want to see the entire process of making burnay jars or if you want to take matters into your own hands, quite literally because they’ll let you take a spin at it, then head for this little spot.

I also took a quick trip to the Burgos Museum (formally Ayala Museum). After initially thinking that it was just another old house converted into an homage to Father Jose Burgos, it turned out to be his family’s actual house where he actually grew up in. The house is huge by any standards, colonial times or not. My jaw just dropped at the sheer floor area of the entire property and the history of Burgos family in Vigan. The museum also has tons of information about the history of Ilocos and what role the region had in the shaping of Philippine history.
